103 Intermediate Serbian I

115 Serbian Culture
3 hours. Development of Serbian culture and thought from earliest times to the present: intellectual currents, art, architecture, literary landmarks, traditional ethics, and society. World Cultures course.

116 Old Slavic and Ukrainian Folklore and Mythology
3 hours. The mythology and folklore of the Ukrainian culture and its close interrelationship with other Old Slavic mythologies and folklores. World Cultures course.

219 Serbian Folklore and Folk Mythology
3 hours. Serbian folk tales, epic and lyric poetry and related traditional beliefs, customs and ethical norms. Taught in English. World Cultures course.

222 Modern Serbian Literature
3 hours. Serbian literature of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Prerequisite(s): Sophomore standing or consent of the instructor. Creative Arts, and World Cultures course.

224 Introduction to Literary Analysis of Slavic Texts
3 hours. Interpretation of Slavic literary texts from different theoretical points of view and various methodological perspectives. Previously listed as SLAV 324. Prerequisite(s): POL 104 or RUSS 104 or the equivalent, or consent of the instructor.

301 Serbian Composition and Conversation I
3 hours. Composition and conversation, systematic grammar, vocabulary development and aural comprehension. Prerequisite(s): SLAV 104 or the equivalent.

399 Independent Study
1 TO 3 hours. Investigation of special problems under the general direction of a staff member. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite(s): Junior standing, consent of the instructor and the head of the department.

460 Topics in Central and Eastern European Literature and Culture
3 OR 4 hours. Study of a time period, movement, genre, or special topic. 3 undergraduate hours. 4 graduate hours. Same as CEES 460. May be repeated up to 2 time(s), with consent of the instructor, and if topics vary. Prerequisite(s): Junior standing or above; or consent of the instructor.

470 Educational Practice with Seminar I
6 hours. The first half of a two-segment sequence of practice teaching, including seminar, to meet certification requirements for teaching in grades six through twelve. Graduate credit only with approval of the department. Prerequisite(s): Good academic standing in a teacher education program, completion of 100 clock hours of pre-student-teaching field experiences, and approval of the department.

542 Studies in Serbian Poetry

545 Studies in Serbian Prose I
4 hours. Specific topics of the Serbian short story and novel are announced each term. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours.

550 Studies in Yugoslav Literary Historiography and Criticism
4 hours. Major concepts and movements in the South Slavic literary history. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours.

560 Studies in Ukrainian Renaissance and Baroque Literature
4 hours. Ukrainian prose, poetry and drama of the sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth centuries.

562 Studies in Ukrainian Romantic and Post-Romantic Poetry
4 hours. Study of a period or movement in the nineteenth and early twentieth-century Ukrainian poetry. Content varies. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours.

565 Studies in Nineteenth Century Ukrainian Prose
4 hours. Study of a genre, topic, period, movement or author. Content varies. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours.

575 Studies in Slavic Literary Theory
4 hours. Russian, Czech, Polish and Serbian contributions to literary theory: Formalism, structuralism, semiotics, phenomenology. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours. Taught in English.

576 Methods and Principles of Translation
4 hours. Introduction to theory and methods of literary translation. Extensive practice translating expository prose, literary prose, and poetry from Slavic languages into English. Taught in English.

596 Independent Study
1 TO 4 hours. Investigation of special problems under the general direction of a faculty member. May be repeated up to 8 time(s). Students may register in more than one section per term. Prerequisite(s): Consent of the instructor and the head of the department.

599 Ph.D. Thesis Research
0 TO 16 hours. The writing of a Ph.D. thesis based on original research in the area of the candidate's major specialization (literature or culture). Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory grading only. May be repeated. Students may register in more than one section per term. Students may apply a maximum of 26 credit hours toward the degree. Prerequisite(s): Admission to candidacy for the doctoral degree and consent of the Director of Graduate Studies.
