101 Elementary Lithuanian I
4 hours. Phonetics, introductory grammar and reading. Four additional half hours each week in the language laboratory. For students who have had no formal work in Lithuanian.

102 Elementary Lithuanian II
4 hours. Continues LITH 101. Four additional half hours each week in the language laboratory. Prerequisite(s): LITH 101 or the equivalent.

103 Intermediate Lithuanian I
4 hours. Continues LITH 102. Prerequisite(s): LITH 102 or the equivalent.

104 Intermediate Lithuanian II
4 hours. Continues LITH 103. Prerequisite(s): LITH 103 or the equivalent.

115 Lithuanian Culture
3 hours. A thematic study of Lithuanian culture from antiquity to the present in an historical and political context. Knowledge of Lithuanian is not required. World Cultures course.

130 Lithuanian Prose Fiction in International Context
3 hours. Analysis of Lithuanian prose fiction with reference to its major influences from Europe, North and South America; the development of international style. Taught in English. Creative Arts, and World Cultures course.

221 Lithuanian Literature I
3 hours. Reading and analysis of the works of selected nineteenth- and twentieth-century authors. The evolution of Lithuanian literature up to 1940. Taught in English.

222 Lithuanian Literature II
3 hours. Reading and analysis of the works of selected authors from 1940 to the present. Prerequisite(s): LITH 221.

230 Lithuanian Literature Abroad
3 hours. Lithuanian writers in exile: themes, trends in development, comparison with writers in Soviet Lithuania; influences of the new environment, writing in English. Taught in English.

399 Independent Study
1 TO 3 hours. Investigation of special problems under the general direction of a staff member. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours. Prerequisite(s): Junior standing, consent of the instructor and the head of the department.

499 Independent Study
1 TO 4 hours. Investigation of special problems under the general direction of a staff member. May be repeated to a maximum of 8 hours. Graduate students may register for more than one section per term; undergraduates may only register for one section per term. Prerequisite(s): Senior or graduate standing, consent of the instructor and the head of the department.

515 Lithuanian Linguistics and Poetics
4 hours. Linguistic and stylisic analysis of Lithuanian texts based on contemporary theories of style.

520 Topics in Historical Lithuanian Linguistics
4 hours. Covers major topics and trends in historical Lithuanian linguistics: linguistic history, sociolinguistic history, history of grammars and dictionaries. Will also cover historical sites of various linguistic schools. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours. Taught in Lithuanian. Prerequisite(s): Consent of the instructor.

550 Studies in Lithuanian Romanticism
4 hours. Study of a genre, movement, or topic. Content varies. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours.

560 Studies in Lithuanian Realism
4 hours. Study of a topic, author, or movement. Content varies. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours.

565 Studies in Twentieth-Century Lithuanian Literature
4 hours. Study of a topic, author or movement. Content varies. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours.

570 Studies in Lithuanian Literary Criticism
4 hours. Function of literary criticism in all epochs of Lithuanian literature. May be repeated to a maximum of 12 hours.

596 Independent Study
